As Term 1 comes to end, I would say that the entire term flew by really quickly. I honestly felt that the course finished too soon and that there was so much information for me to take in. But, maybe this is more personal to me, because I’m coming from an Engineering school to an Arts school, so things are different. Although the past couple of months have been overwhelming, the amount of things I’ve learnt along the way has been phenomenal and can’t wait to learn more!
Unit 1.2 Design for Animation Narrative
After all of Nigel’s classes I really feel that I finally have some kind of knowledge on film theory and how things work. Before, I had no clue that there were different types of camera shots and how films were critically analyzed. But now, I know what terms like Mise-en-scene, juxta positioning and auteur theory are. This unit has really helped me get a firm grasp on the film narrative and how various people have different views and thoughts on the same thing. I also learnt a lot about how much effort goes into writing a research paper, how to cite and reference other people’s work and also how to academically write a critical report. All this is very new to me, but it was nice to learn something new apart from animation. I honestly feel that knowledge of the animation narrative is crucial for stories behind short film ideas that we might come up with, as all of the entire theory is important.
Here is the critical report that I submitted:

Unit 1.1 Computer Animation Fundamentals
After all of Serra’s classes I can finally use Unreal Engine to some extent and basic functioning of the game engine. The amount of cool things we did in Unreal across the first term was phenomenal. I was able to use facial capture in Meta Human, I could rig a character and then animate him, I could also create a basic scene in Unreal and use the level sequencer to animate a camera. This was the first time that I was learning a game engine and it was a good experience for me. I want to learn more and keep using Unreal Engine, so that I don’t forget key aspects of the software.
After all of George’s classes I couldn’t believe that after all these years, I could finally animate a basic object. For me it wasn’t just about animating something, but all of the theory behind it as well. I loved how George told us the fundamentals, irrespective of how much we knew animation. I could finally animate a character, get a proper walk cycle, a casual jump and of course the infamous bouncing ball! I feel ready to take on harder tasks now and I want to push myself to do better animations and exaggerate them as much as I can.
